Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL)
A Service Learning Project
I would say this was a really fun and enriching experience, those it is not without its hiccups and room for improvement.
I think a lot of your experience boils down to the leaders you chose and the group mates you have. It was interesting to find out that even though we are all training to be teachers, our values and priorities can be so different. End of the day, I think its really about how you make it out to be. Personally, I had one of the best time in my life finding out about a side of Singapore I never knew and chatting with friends from other subjects.
Our group's partner was Food Rescue Sengkang (FRSK) and I sure do miss the time going around Pasir Panjang wholesale centre asking for any donation of fruits and vegetables. It was my first time there, and it was really an eyeopener looking at where our imported food came from, and learning about how shipment delays can affect our food security. I also really enjoyed distributing food to the residents and watching the camaraderie of the community volunteers who took time out of their Saturday to help out.
As the treasurer of the group, I have learnt about how to seek for quotations, do budgeting and claiming. As part of the media team, it was also my first time creating a captioned video with the help of DaVinci Resolve. While some may not have had an enriching experience in GESL, I personally had a lot of fun with friends, learnt valuable skills and made the most of my time there.
